Luxury Mattress

There are several components that make up a high-quality luxury mattress, each providing a different aspect of comfort. Many mattresses are based on a series of tempered steel coils, which provide overall support. These springs come in a variety of different gauges, which is a measure of thickness. A higher gauge number denotes a thinner coil that is more flexible, and thus makes up a softer bed. Those seeking a firmer luxury mattress would choose a lower gauge number. In addition, a higher-quality mattress will usually have more springs than a typical one, as this provides more support and overall life for the mattress.

To provide cushioning and separation between one’s body and the coils, manufacturers add layers of upholstery to the top and bottom of the mattress. This layer also helps to protect the top layers of the mattress from being damaged by the coils. In addition to the upholstery, luxury mattresses will often have extra padding sewn onto the outside. A mattress of this type is known as a “pillowtop”, and can provide an outstanding level of comfort for the consumer.

This padding typically consists of a type of polyurethane foam, and can also contain polyester batting, which helps make the area more breathable and soft. Latex is a good choice for this padding, as it provides a soft feel while still providing support, and will hold up well over time. Another recommended option is visco-elastic foam, also known as “memory foam”, which helps dampen any movement that originates from the other side of the bed. Most people find that foam shaped in an egg crate style feels more comfortable than a straight slab.

Some pillowtop mattresses even have this extra padding on the bottom as well, to allow one to flip them periodically to sleep on the other side. This is especially useful if the person tends to sleep in one spot every night, and creates an indentation over time where his body usually lays.

Many high-quality mattresses contain certain areas that have been beefed up to strengthen them. Slabs of stiff foam are sometimes added to these locations, such as the edges, to provide extra support and rigidity.

Just as important as the mattress is a high-quality foundation normally made up of a metal or wooden frame around a group of springs. Also called a box spring, this component adds to the level of comfort of the mattress, and also absorbs much of the wear and tear placed on the bed each night. Mattresses and box springs are designed to work together, and should always be purchased as a set at the same time.

Most agree that purchasing a luxury mattress is well worth the extra money spent, especially when one factors in the dramatic improvement in both comfort and the sleep experience. It is rare that one would ever want to return to a standard mattress after experiencing the higher level of quality on a nightly basis.
